Unlike some areas of the country, there were no long lines of Sampson residents waiting to vote this morning across the county, but there was a slow, steady crowd filing into the 23 precincts across Sampson to mark their ballot in Election 2012.
No one cared to comment on who they voted for as they left the polling places Tuesday, opting to keep their choice to themselves. In fact, most weren’t interested in even broadcasting what party they supported.
Instead, voters kept to themselves, picked up their ballot, made the appropriate marks, slid it into the counter and headed out the door, having done their civic duty for the day.
One voter, who asked not to be identified, said she was thrilled to be able to vote and did so for the sake of the country she loved dearly. “It’s a privilege to vote; I wish everyone felt that way.”
It looks as if many in Sampson did. Although vote totals for Tuesday won’t be available until later tonight, over 14,000 county voters have already cast ballots, having done so during the early voting period which ran through Saturday.
At the Board of Elections Tuesday, a steady flow of calls came in throughout the morning, with citizens asking if they were registered and, in many cases, where they should go to vote.
Precincts will remain open until 7:30 p.m. Then vote tallies will begin to filter in from the county precincts.
