The Sampson County Relay for Life committee is ending one year and starting another, and they did it, basically, on the same night as the group gathered to wrap up the 2012 campaign and begin discussions about the 2013 effort.
Among the topics discussed were final monies raised during the June Relay, a report given by chairwoman Sherry Massey, who noted that she was extremely pleased with the results, particularly considering the fact that the Friday night events were rained out.
“I am very pleasde to announce that our total for 2012 was $194,883.96. It is amazing that we were able to accomplish this with only 39 teams and having to shut down extremely early on Friday night due to the weather. Sampson County truly is a great county when it comse to fighting back against cancer,” declared Massey.
During the last committee meeting for 2012 and the first meeting for 2013, Massey introduced the new American Cancer Society representative for the area, Jo Clevenger. The chairwoman also introduced eight new committee members.
“I am extremely delighted and excited about the new members joining our committee this year. Along with the veterans, they will make our efforts to fight against cancer better than ever,” said Massey.
The committee discussed plans for an upcoming Wrap up and Kickoff rally. The date is set for Tuesday, Oct. 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held in the fellowship hall of Grove Park Baptist Church, 609 N.E. Blvd.
“We will have refreshments and will celebrate last year’s successes and also kick off this year’s challenge to do even better,” remarked the chairwoman.
Team registration will be available during the kickoff celebration and awards and other recognitions will be given out.
The committee also announced plans to have a display during the annual Street Fair in October where teams will also be able to sign up. Other potential fund aising activities will include the selling of luminaries as Christmas gifts.
“Allowing individuals to purchase luminaries as Christmas gifts is a wonderful way for us to help the fight against cancer and at the same time remember someone special through the donation. We will send notifications of the gift to the person who is being honored by the gift,” explained Massey.
