TURKEY — Citing a decision to pursue new challenges and opportunities, Sarah White, Turkey’s town clerk, tendered her retirement Tuesday night. White’s letter states that her retirement will be effective Dec. 28, 2012.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed this job,” White said in a telephone interview. “I know I will miss the people and the job, but it is time. By December, I will have served as clerk for about 14 and half years. I want the chance to do some different things.”
White began as Turkey’s town clerk May 26, 1998. Wearing hats as clerk and the budget and finance officer, she has served under a number of mayors and town board members.
Current mayor Tim Clifton shared his appreciation for the work White has done for the town during the meeting.
“I hate to see Sarah leave. I appreciate what she has done for the Town of Turkey. Sarah has done a terrific job and has gone beyond her responsibilities many times to help the town be successful. She has not only assisted me but the town’s people and others that needed help from us. We will miss her tremendously,” cited Clifton.
In her letter to the board, White stated, “My decision is leading me to pursue new challenges and opportunities. It has been a rewarding experience working for the Town of Turkey and I hope that I have made positive contributions to the town.”
The clerk shared that she had been thinking of this decision for some time and decided now was the right time to finally make a move.
“I have given this decision a tremendous amount of thought. The town’s Personnel Policy requires a 30-day notice. I am submitting this letter early to allow the board adequate time to find a replacement. I will also give some training time that will be beneficial to the new town clerk, finance and budget officer,” shared White.
White explained that she was going to miss coming to work each day but acknowledged she was excited that now she would have an opportunity to do other things. While not giving any specifics other than stating she would be spending more time with family and friends and also doing more within her church, White shared that she was looking into doing a lot of different things that a daily job prevented her from doing.
“I appreciate the opportunity to have worked with the mayors and the town board over the years. There have been challenges but we have always come through them. I hope I will be remembered as a positive influence in the town after I leave and wish for the new clerk the best,” said White.
After hearing the reading of the letter of retirement, the town’s commissioners approved that an ad for the vacancy should be placed for two weeks, no later than the first week in October. The mayor and board members stated that this would give them a chance to interview applicants and be ready to take action possibly by the meeting next month.
