A 34-year-old Dunn woman has found herself in trouble with city law enforcement after being stopped for suspicion of impaired driving and then reportedly backing into the officer’s patrol car as he was attempting to retrieve the alco-sensor from the vehicle.
Brandin Apperson Holleman of 39 Oak Tree Court, Dunn, was charged with driving while impaired. She was placed under a $1,500 secured bond and is expected to make her first appearance in Sampson County District Court on the charge June 10.
Police reports did not note what Holleman registered on the breathalyzer test.
She was taken into custody after Sgt. Chris Cantrell pulled her over on Forest Drive, in Coharie Country Club, just after 9 p.m. Friday.
According to Cantrell’s report, he began following Holleman’s vehicle after being called by the E911 center in reference to a possible impaired driver reported to authorities by a citizen following the vehicle into Clinton.
The suspect, Cantrell was told, was last seen on Sunset Avenue near the BP station. Authorities provided a description of the vehicle and a registration number at that time.
Cantrell spotted a vehicle with the registration number that had been given to him traveling down Sunset, “swerving from lane to lane” and braking erratically.
The vehicle, his report noted, made a wide turn onto Forest Drive and he followed, attempting to stop the vehicle, which eventually came to a halt approximately 3/10 of a mile on Forest.
When Cantrell approached the vehicle, he said he asked the suspect if she’d been drinking and she told him no, but his report indicated that he could detect a strong odor of alcohol inside the car noticed more alcohol in the vehicle and believed the suspect to be slurring her speech when she talked.
That’s when Cantrell went back to his patrol vehicle to run the suspect’s name and retrieve the alco-sensor. While he was reaching into the rear driver’s side door, Cantrell later reported that he heard a loud noise, then felt pain in the right side of his head and his right shoulder, then fell to his knees.
Police reports note that the suspect had backed into the vehicle, knocking Cantrell down and injuring him in the process.
A N.C. Highway Patrol trooper was called in to investigate the crash and Holleman was taken into custody and charged.
