A Sampson County man was apparently using a recreation vehicle as more than just his residence, something law enforcement officers found out when they went to the Hayne Stretch Road address to follow up on a break-in probe late in the week.

That man, Matthew Newgent, is now jailed under a $185,000 bond, charged with a laundry list of offenses, most felonies.

According to Cpl. Marcus Smith with the Sampson Sheriff’s Department, officers with the Criminal Investigative Division were at the RV following up on information pertaining to a break-in when they discovered 11 pounds of packaged marijuana under a couch in the RV. Also discovered was assorted property they believe was taken during the breaking and entering they were there to investigate.

The property, Smith said, was believed to have been taken from a Pumpkin Town Road residence during a break-in earlier in the year.

Newgent was immediately taken into custody and charged with trafficking marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance; larceny of a firearm, breaking and entering, safe cracking, possession of stolen goods, larceny after breaking and entering and possession of a stolen firearm.
