Police responding to a report of a woman being held hostage in a Clinton hotel room early Wednesday morning didn’t find a woman, but did discover plenty of drugs in the room.
According to Clinton police reports, tipsters at the Budget Inn Hotel, located at 506 Southeast Blvd. in Clinton, reported that suspicious activity and a possible hostage situation was taking place in room 15 of the hotel around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.
When police knocked on the door to the room, reports show, they smelled the odor of marijuana. After knocking for a reported three minutes, one of the occupants of the room opened the door.
Once inside the room, police reportedly talked with a 21-year-old female and a 25-year-old male and realized that there was no hostage situation. The male suspect explained to police that the two were boyfriend and girlfriend, admitted to smoking marijuana and gave consent for the officers to search the room.
Within minutes, officers discovered and seized 21.0 grams of white pills believed to be Hydrocodone, found in a white baggie; digital scales; a plastic baggie with a green, leafy substance in it believed to be marijuana; a dollar bill rolled up with white powdery substance at the end of it; a card with a white powdery substance on it; and over $1,000 in cash.
Jeffery Scott Melvin, 25, of 1150 Hickock Lane, Immokalee, Florida; was charged with trafficking opium or heroin and given a $500,000 secured bond. Melvin was also given a trial date of Nov. 5
The female in the room, Meredith Lynn McDonald, 21, of 3400 Corinth Church Road, Roseboro, was cited with possession of Hydrocodone and given a trial date of Nov. 5.
Reports show that when questioned about the drugs, Melvin allegedly said they were not his and that he was living in the hotel with his cousin (who was not named in the report). When he was read his rights, Melvin refused to answer any additional questions from police.
