A suspect in the Labor Day shootout and wreck along Sunset Avenue went from the confines of a hospital bed to a jail cell Monday.

Stanley Jamel Henry, 23, of 619 Eastover Terrace, was released from Wake Med Monday only to be transported back to Clinton where he was charged with three felonies and placed behind bars under a $750,000 bond.

He is now charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a felon, all in connection with the early morning shootout and eventual wreck on Sunset Avenue in the wee hours of Labor Day morning.

That incident began at a backyard club in Sampson County, where an argument escalated into a car chase down Sunset, with guns blazing as two vehicles barrelled down the four-lane road. One of those vehicles eventually plowed into the back of innocent motorist Ray Cuvilje and his wife, sending his F150 pickup into a utility pole and causing it to overturn. The vehicle Henry was in was sent spiraling out of control, landing across all four travel lanes and injuring he and other passengers in the vehicle.

After the wreck, the gun battle between those in the Acura Legend and a white Pontiac continued, even as, police say, people were trying to assist Cuvilje and his wife.

Days after the incident, one of the suspects, Joseph Aaron Mack, 25, of 104 Mack Joseph Lane, Roseboro, was arrested and charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Additional assault charges were later leveled against him in connection with the continued shooting after the wreck which, officers have noted, put the Cuviljes and those trying to help them in danger.

While Mack and Henry are now behind bars, police continue searching for a third suspect, James Curtis Walker, aka Baby J. Warrants have been issued for Walker, 21, of Golden Eagle Lane, charging him with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Officers are requesting that anyone with information on Walker’s whereabouts contact Clinton police at 910-592-3104 or at police@cityofclintonnc.us.
