Renovations ongoing at 421 rest area
Barricades surround the U.S. 421 rest area, halting visitors from stopping while renovation work continues. The Sampson County rest area was closed to the public at the beginning of June for those necessary renovations. Department of Transportation officials have said it could take as long as six months to get the facility repaired and back in service. In March, the Sampson County Board of Commissioners accepted a proposal from the DOT to keep the facility in operation with reduced hours and minimal renovations after the state initially expressed its intention to close the facility last September.
