Pack 70 Webelo II, James Edward Carr Jr. receives the Arrow of Light Award during the troop's Blue and Gold Banquet April 30. The Arrow of Light Award is the highest award in Cub Scouting and is the only badge that can be worn on the Boy Scout uniform. James is the son of Ed and Linda Jewell Carr of Clinton. Former resident is researcher at the Palace
Penne Smith Sandbeck, who grew up on Sycamore Street, spoke to the Sampson County Historical Society about a project she is working on at Tryon Palace in New Bern. Sandbeck is the daughter of Parma Matthis Smith, and the granddaughter of George Kirby and Jane Matthis of Clinton. Before speaking about her research on Royal Governor Josiah Martin, Sandbeck happily reminisced about living in Clinton. Sandbeck left Clinton for the University of Chapel Hill. She went on to get a Masters of Art History from the University of Delaware. She is an architectural historian, has written a book on the Architectural History of Green County, and currenly works as a researcher at Tryon Palace. (Ruthie Pope/Sampson Independent)
