North Carolina s electric cooperatives, including South River EMC, as well as other utilities, have encountered a range of burglaries from copper being stolen from trucks to copper thefts at electrical substations. In this situation, thieves cut through substation fencing and locks, exposing themselves to high-voltage electricity, to steal copper from inside substations. ‘Because of the high voltage equipment in electric substations, only trained, authorized personnel should enter a substation,’ said South River EMC CEO & Executive Vice President Buddy G. Creed. ‘Because substations have energized electric equipment, we go to great lengths to ensure people are aware that they need to keep out. All of our substations are clearly marked with several warning signs, all gates are locked and each substation is surrounded with a six foot chain-link fence with an additional foot of three spans of barbed wire.’ Courtesy photo SREMC puts out warning
