Campus ministries at Mount Olive — Integral to college experience
MOUNT OLIVE — Through the Campus Ministries programs at Mount Olive College, opportunities abound for students to participate in chapel programs, attend Bible study, volunteer in community service projects, travel and participate in mission work, and the list goes on. From its meager beginnings in 1951 to today, Mount Olive College has focused on a holistic approach to education. Rather than just allowing the academic, spiritual, and social p...

Reading the Bible for information, transformation
Do you enjoy reading the Bible? This story stirred while singing …’the B I B L E yes, that’s the book for me, I’ll stand alone on the Word of God, the B I B L E’. Children have embraced that little tune, singing their hearts out in VBS, Sunday school, even programs with parents watching and beaming with pride. Long ago in a land where freedom to pray and sing such songs in school existed, the tune even echoed in classrooms where children lear...

An Extreme Makeover
of the Spiritual kind

It seems that reality shows have taken over our television viewing. One of those which have appeared in a number of versions is the “extreme makeover” variety. There are shows about an extreme makeover of the personal appearance of individuals. There are shows where they perform an “extreme makeover” of someone’s house or property. There is no telling what will come next. However, there is one “extreme makeover” that, though it is the one of ...

God forgives and forgets!
Do you really believe God forgets your sins once you repent? He does. Jesus paid in full the price for our sins, that we are forgiven and have no reason to feel guilty or condemned once we have repented. Now I want to go a step further and make sure you understand God not only forgives but also forgets all your sins. He does not forgive you and then say: “Oh, boy, I remember when I had to forgive Johnny for pulling his sister’s hair and makin...

Are we pleasing God or man?
In John 8:29 Jesus says “And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.” Do you seek to please God or man? Whose approval do you desire to have the most God’s or men? Jesus makes it plain and clear that he wants to please the Father in all things. How many times do we seek to please man, but yet will not check to see if God is pleased in the matter? Just because man approve...

Eternal lessons learned through life’s journey
Last week I shared how my computer died leaving me fearful that all my writing was lost. The good news came when I read a message on my desk —“computer man called, no hope for computer, but writing and pictures saved.” I rushed to pick up the silver corpse, the little hard drive holding my treasures, and to pay the man for his services. The next afternoon, Connor and I headed to Fayetteville computer shopping. Waiting for the Geek Squad to ...

New every morning
Holding on to your past only gives you opportunity to relive it. The Bible says that as a man thinks so is he (Proverbs 23:7). I like to make this point by saying. “Where the mind goes the man follows.” If I put my mind on the past, I will keep repeating it one way or another, but if I put it on the future I will make progress toward God’s dream for me. You don’t have to be afraid of repeating the past. If you believe God is greater than yo...

Telling the Lord, no
The apostle Peter is sometimes referred to as “impetuous Peter” because of his often impulsive words and actions. It is true that Peter often speaks up without first giving it adequate thought. An amazing part of our record of the words and actions of Peter is that he often told the Lord “no” and that the Lord was wrong. When Jesus told His apostles that he would go to Jerusalem, suffer, be killed and raised again the third day, Peter “began ...

Serving God through the interim ministry
In the life of any church, there is a time when a pastor leaves. Sometimes it’s because a minister moves on to a larger congregation or some other field of ministry. At other times, there are times when the pastor leaves for personal reasons — illness, death and retirement. There are even times when ministers are forced from the local ministry. What does a church not governed by a bishop or some other authority that names the new pastor do ...

I believe this is where God wants me to be and I couldn’t be happier.” The oldest of six children and the only son, Dees was born in Fayetteville and moved arou...

Don’t look back
In a previous article I urged you to never give up. Never giving up means marching into your future with boldness and confidence, seeing each new day as an opportunity to move forward in all the best God has for you and taking each new challenge as a mountain to be climbed instead of a boulder that will crush you. You have a great future ahead of you, but you will not be able to fully enter into it and enjoy it if your past still holds you ...

Don’t put off until tomorrow,

Has your computer ever crashed and caused you to cry? Computers usually aren’t the creator of our crisis; it’s us that brings confusion and chaos when we don’t know what to do and keep digging deeper into technology trauma. Recently, my computer died with me sitting in front of it, touching the keys that formed words unfolding a story on my screen, and I mourned my loss out loud. I was alone at Tim’s Gift as fear gripped my gut. How could thi...

The Attack on Christian marriages
Ephesians 4:26,27 says “ Be yea angry and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath; Neither give place (opportunity) to the devil.” This is what has happened to the Christian marriage, and it’s time to speak up and out about what Satan and his schemes have done. Satan has come to steal, kill and destroy the Christian marriage. He takes no vacation, nor does he rest; he is setting up a plan right now as I speak to take your marriag...

What Paul saw when he was blind
Most of us are familiar with the events surrounding the conversion of Saul of Tarsus, known to most of us as the apostle Paul. There are three records of his conversion. First the account of his conversion found in Acts chapter nine and then his relating of that event to the mob in Jerusalem (Acts 22:1-16) and to King Agrippa (Acts 26:1-18). A brief summary of those events are that while he traveled to Damascus to arrest those who were found ...
