Pray God’s word over fear
Two weeks ago I was at a local talent show where some young kids demonstrated their gifts of dancing and singing. It was an awesome display of talent from start to finish. There was a lot of parent support on hand as well, which made it an even greater night. It’s so important that parents support their children in all of their events, it will help develop their child’s confidence and over all self-esteem. While sitting there watching the k...

Two kinds of law
In the Bible we find two kinds of law. We are not speaking of the old Law of Moses and the law of Christ, for they are not two kinds of law, but instead, two distinct laws. Found within both of these laws are two kinds of laws. They have at times been designated as positive divine law and moral law. Let us first briefly examine moral laws. Moral law relates to that which is right within itself. It has always been right and will ever be righ...

Showing — and telling — God how much you love him
What part of Easter has been written in red on your heart? The week of Easter is a favorite time of year for many people who travel and take time away from demanding schedules. Others find pleasure in staying home to relax, spring clean and make their yards look lovely. Some never miss a day of work, while several spend each day looking for a place to work. It seems we are always looking, searching, and seeking ways to fulfill our needs, want...

Three important words to remember: “and Nehemiah prayed.”
In Nehemiah 4:4, we find three words that are vitally important to remember when we are trying to stand through a storm: “And Nehemiah prayed.” How did he respond to all the attacks that came against him—the laughing, the anger, the rage, the judgment, the criticism, being told his desired goal was impossible? He prayed! Let me ask you: What would happen if you prayed every single time you felt afraid or intimated? What if you prayed every ...

Who’s in control?
Why does he have to do that? Doesn’t he realize that it’s annoying when he refuses to hear what I have to say and doesn’t do what I want him to do when I asked him to? Those kids of mine are driving me nuts, never listening and obeying, talking back and refusing to do what I told them to do. Why do I have to do my work and co-workers job, don’t they realize I do it all? Why does she take advantage of me all the time? If those people around me...

Mary Gran resident finds silver lining in serving
Often when a tragedy or an illness impacts someone’s life they become despondent or discouraged. Not true of Mary Gran resident Carolyn Vann. The 72-year-old Vann suffered a stroke in March 2011 while teaching a Compensatory Education class at Sampson Community College. After rehabilitation, she went looking for something to do. What she found was a continuation of her profession and her love. Vann said she loved teaching and after she had ...

Central Baptist begins expansion
On Easter Sunday, April 8, Central Baptist Church in the Plain View community broke ground in preparation for the expansion of their Tabernacle. The groundbreaking was the culmination of a great weekend of Celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ with Communion services on Good Friday; the annual KidCentral event, Easter Eggstreme, with 10,000 eggs falling from a helicopter; their first Easter Sunrise service, as well as worship services at the Student Center, Theater Campus, Chapel and Tabernacle. Currently seating around 1,000, the expansion will add another 500 seats to what was intended to be a temporary worship facility. The Tabernacle (seen in the background), built in 2001, was planned to be a multi-use building until a larger more permanent structure could be built. With the current economic status, adding on to their existing facilities is better use of the resources God has provided than beginning a new structure. The additional seating will be added to the each side of the current worship facility as stadium seating. A wide screen is planned to be added for better viewing from the new seats. Building will take place in 2012 with plans for completion in the Fall. Three days and three nights?
Most Christians believe that Jesus died on Good Friday and was raised on Easter Sunday. However, notice the words of Jesus in Matthew 12:38-40. “Then certain of the Scribes and of the Pharisees answered saying, Master we would see a sign from thee. But He answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign, and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas (Jonah): For as Jonas was thr...

The true meanings of Easter
The Easter season is filled with many symbols and meanings. As Easter approaches, it is good to be reminded of what we are celebrating. The story of Easter as given to us in the Gospel of Matthew helps us to understand what this day means to Christians around the world. The others symbols shown in this feature outline the true meanings of many of the symbols that we experience each year as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Matt...

Being a spark that gets a fire going
What part of the Easter story is written in red on your heart? This year I opted not to write an Easter story. Reasoning that each of the dedicated Faith and Family writers would write about Easter, I chose to write how the enemy chases us and submitted the two-part story long before the Good Friday deadline. Two weeks before Easter, I woke up at three in the morning with a stirring inside to rise up and write. Tossing, turning, and telling m...

Few there be that find it, why?
The word of God tells us that God would “have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” (I Tim. 2:4), and that He “is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (II Pet. 3:9). It also tells us that “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…” (John 3:16). The apostle John stated, “And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to ...

A Reason of the Hope that is in you
Peter, exhorts Christians saying, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (I Peter 3:15). This verse shows us that first of all, we can have hope of eternal life, and secondly, that we should be willing and able to express to others the reason that we have such a hope. We will say little in this article concernin...

Testify about God’s goodness in your life
In Luke 8:39 Jesus tells a man who he had just casted out many devils to “return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee.” Do you go home after church telling about the goodness of the Lord? God has been good to you and I so why can’t we speak about his goodness to those that are in our house? Everything else is talked in our homes so I believe we need to start talking about what Jesus has done and is about to ...

Will they revive the stones out of the heap of rubbish, seeing that they are burned?” Basically, Sanballat was saying, “This mess is too big to ever rebuild!” Yes, t...

Children can help us draw closer to God
Do you believe little children can rise up and bring people closer to Christ? The Bible teaches that children are a gift from the Lord. Psalm 127:3-4 shares this message, “… the children born to us are our special pay. The children of a young man are like arrows in the hand of a soldier. Happy is the man who has many of them.” God reminds us how precious children are, how they fulfill our lives and bring blessings to aging parents. Children b...

Not everyone likes progress
Sanballat was a formidable enemy; he did not give up easily. When he heard the building of the city walls was going forward in spite of his objections, “he was angry and in a great rage, and he ridiculed the Jews” (Nehemiah 4:1). The more they built, the angrier he became. Maybe you know people who become angry when others try to make progress, better themselves, or do something new and different. Why would people become angry when others t...
