What is the church anyway?
We talk and write so much about the church, yet there may be a deficiency in the understanding of some just what the church is. When we say “the church”, we are of course speaking of the one found in the pages of the New Testament. So what is “the church”? First, I would suggest to you that “the church” is something that the Lord Himself built. He said to Peter and the other apostles, “I will build my church” (Matt. 16:18). One might say, “...

Decide and determine to be joyful
Do you believe joy is a great gift for this Christmas season, for any season? John 15:11 tells the good news — joy is a gift from God; He gives joy so our joy is complete. Are you joyful or joyless? Is your joy complete? How can we know if we’re living and loving with joy? It’s in our hearts, heaping helpings that fill our hearts to overflowing. Christmas time, in all its splendor, magnifies joy. Each person reading this story sings “Joy to...

The true reason for the season
The birth of Jesus 1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register. 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to r...

To Canaan land
The apostle Paul wrote, “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Rom. 15:4). A prime example of this is seen in the parallel of the exodus of Israel from Egyptian captivity to the promise land and our own exodus from sin to our promise land, heaven. The parallel is obvious and especially after Paul makes note of it to the Corinthians (...

Tune in to the real Christmas story

It’s the time of the year when Ralphie, George Bailey, and Buddy the Elf are welcomed into our homes. What better way to spend time with our families than curling up in front of a classic Christmas movie? On Christmas Day, however, something interesting happens. Apparently the cable companies get together and decide it would be a good idea to play the same movie for an entire day. The first showing is wonderful. We laugh remembering our favor...

Lock out craziness, lock in a closeness with God
Last week, I shared how it feels when we are locked out. This week, I have reflected on how Mary and Joseph must have felt as the days grew closer for her to give birth to baby Jesus. Surely, they felt locked out as government, guidelines, friends, even family forced them to look elsewhere for help and hope. They traveled far away where God was with them in every adventure they encountered while delivering His Son — His gift to the world. The...

That’s just your interpretation
As one who firmly adheres to the practice of speaking where the Bible speaks and remaining silent where the Bible is silent and of calling Bible things by Bible names and doing Bible things in Bible ways, it is not unusual for me to answer a Bible question by simply quoting or reading a scripture. For instance, if one were to ask if I believed that one had to be born again to go to heaven, I might quote or read where Jesus said, “…Except a ma...

It can’t separate me
Romans 8:39 says “ Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” As we close out 2011 and enter into 2012, there are several things that the Lord is requiring us to do. Things like forgiving others, loving one another in spite of disagreements and getting over small and petty stuff that has no impact in the Kingdom of God. But there are some things tha...

To enter God’s kingdom you must be born again
Have you ever wondered what the phrase “born again” means? The Bible records that Jesus used the phrase in a conversation with a man named Nicodemus. Nicodemus approached Jesus at night (Nick at night). He was curious about Jesus and the kingdom of God. Jesus told him: “Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). Nicodemus responded, “But how can anyone be born when he is old?” (John 3:4). Nicodemus was a h...

Having confidence in our salvation
Often when asked if one would go to heaven if they died at that moment, the answer is something like, “I think so” or “I hope so”. Such answers betray a lack of confidence in the heart of the one answering. Two questions need to be answered concerning this confidence. First, is it possible to have absolute confidence, no doubt whatsoever, concerning eternal salvation? The answer to this question is a resounding, yes! How is it that we can h...
