Pigskin Picks: Week 1

Midway will roll; L’wood in close one

Football season is back and that means it’s time for some Pigskin Picks. Like last season, every week will consist of a Game of the Week that will highlight what we believe the best matchup is in the county that week.

Hobbton opens their season on the road in Spivey’s Corner to face the Midway Raiders. Hobbton looks to continue the rebuilding process in coach Robert Hill’s second campaign. Midway returns an experienced backfield with quarterback Austin Raynor and running back Sha’king Warren and should prove to be too much for the young Wildcats.

Final: Midway 32, Hobbton 14

In the Game of the Week, the Union Spartans open their season at home against the Lakewood Leopards. The Spartans went 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the Four County Conference last season. Union was the surprise team of the county last year, and they hope to build on their late-season success.

Lakewood went 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the Carolina Conference last season, losing only to James Kenan in conference play. The Leopards showed a new look on offense at the Pigskin Jamboree with Quamaine Williams starting at quarterback. The athletic senior had some nice runs and is a threat to hurt opponents with his feet and arm.

This one has the potential to be a back-and-forth shootout with two experienced offensive units taking shots at each other all night. If Lakewood’s defense can contain Union’s speed on the edge, they may come up with enough stops to pull out the win. Union will have to get a strong effort from their offensive line to control a strong Lakewood front. Lakewood scores late in the game, pulling off a big early season road win.

Final: Lakewood 27, Union 21
