After suffering two losses this week, the Union Spartans got the mojo back as they downed the James Kenan Tigers, 3-0 in non conference volloeyball action on Thursday afternoon. The win is the first of the 2-16 season.
The Spartans came out on fire in the first set jumping out to a 9-3 lead, but missed serves hindered the Spartans with the Tigers roaring back to tie the game at 11-11. From that point on it was a teeter-totter set with the serve being a one point event. Alyson Hope and Ariana Bell tag teamed with three consecutive points to seal the first set win, 25-21.
The second set was almost a duplicate of the first with the Tigers deadlocking the set at 14-14, but the Spartans would begin to pull away jumping out to a 10-17 lead. Ali Alphin then served three consecutive points, including two aces giving the Spartans a 22-19 lead. Lindsey Ammons would finish the set off with the final three points, including an ace.
Up 2-0 the Spartans knew they had to stay focused and they did, with the third set staying close at the outset with the score tied a 7-7. However, Union would gradually pull away led by Ammons, who would serve four in a row to put the Spartans up 21-16. From that point the Spartans cruised to a 25-17 win.
Union coach Krystin McPhail said she was pleased with her team’s performance.
“We played together which is something we haven’t done in the past. We communicated much better tonight and fixed some things,” concluded McPhail.
Alphin led the Spartans with six aces, three kills, 11 assists and two digs. Ammons had four aces, four kills and one block. Britini Register had five digs and Sabrina Newkirk dug up four digs.
The Spartans record now stands at 1-2 overall.
