Two old rivals Sampson County rivals got together on Tuesday afternoon on the volleyball court in a match that went down to the wire in three of the four sets. In the end, it was the Spartans coming away with the win 3-1.
The Spartans would take the first set 27-25 and Hobbton would rebound with a 25-12 second set, but the final two sets were won by Union by a total of four points, on scores 26-24 and 27-25.
Hobbton Coach Russell Jones said after the game his team couldn’t get the serves over the net when they needed it and Union was able to have success.
“In our first outing we served the ball really well, but today was not the case,” said Jones.
Union Coach Krystin McPhail said she was proud of the amount of intensity her team showed compared to the first outing with Hobbton.
“We served many points in clutch situations and our communication on the court tonight was great,” noted McPhail. “I want to give a big shout out to Hannah Smith. She served great when we needed her to.”
Ali Alphin led the Spartans with 11 assists and four digs. Lindsey Alphin added four aces and two blocks, Alyson Hope contributed four aces and two digs, Sabrina Newkirk added nine digs and Britini Register had seven digs.
Union’s record now stands at 3-2 while Hobbton’s record is 3-1.
