Journey Church’s Glow Run to benefit Sampson schools

The Journey Church, located on U.S. Highway 421 in the Midway community, is preparing to host a 5K Glow Run. The event is set for this Saturday, Oct. 1, and all proceeds raised will benefit Sampson County Schools. This is the third run overall held by the church but this year’s run will be a little different.

“In the past, we have used the proceeds for missions and other ministries of the church,” said Carrie Wallum, one of the coordinators of the event.

But Wallum, along with pastors Andy and Terri Shaffer, want to use this year’s event to give back to the community.

“This year, all proceeds will be used to buy copy paper for Sampson County Schools,” Wallum continued.

Even though the church is located in the heart of the Midway community, organizers want to express that all Sampson County Schools will benefit from the event. Some will even take part in it.

Lakewood and Midway will be providing participants in the run as the Lakewood ROTC 5K Team plans to participate as well as Midway High School’s cross country team and Midway Middle School’s “Girls On The Run” team. Lakewood will also have student volunteers assisting that evening.

The Shaffers are quick to express appreciation for the support shown by the community, but they also do not want to lose sight of the greater purpose behind this run.

“We just simply want to follow Jesus’ example of radical serving and giving,” said Andy Shafer.

“We are happy to be able to provide an opportunity for the community to come together, fulfill a need, and have fun doing it,” said Terri Shafer. “We want to be the ‘hands and feet’ of Jesus.”

“We owe a special thank you to several school administrators and school board members for their support and help in promoting this event,” she continued. “It’s certainly a community event and we hope to have even more community involvement next year.”

The race will begin at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday and will start and end at the church. It is a timed event that will be hosted by Run The East. The entry fee is $35 and interested participants can register at or in person the day of race beginning at 6:30 p.m.
