The Crusaders made the long trip to Cannon Christian School on Friday night in the first round of the North Carolina Independent Schools State Championship. The game was close throughout, with the score 8-6 at the half. Cannon would kick a field goal in the fourth quarter and add a safety to hold off the Crusaders with an 11-8 win to advance to the first round.
The Crusaders got on the board first when Ty Scarborough picked off a passed and strolled 71 yards for the touchdown. Derek Bryant would add two points on the conversion to put the Crusaders up 8-0.
Cannon would answer on a 44-yard reception in the second quarter, but missed on the extra point still trailing by two, 8-6.
The Crusaders couldn’t generate any offense in the second half and Cannon was able to put five points on the board to hold on to win.
Scarborough led Harrells with 19 carries and 84 yards, scoring one touchdown on defense.
Don Banks was outstanding on defense with 8.5 tackles, while Shaquor Newkirk and Ethan Faircloth had eight and seven tackles, respectively.
For the Crusaders, the season comes to an end.
“These kids have played with a lot of heart all year. We’ve had to overcome some injuries along the way. They are a good bunch of young men,” said Coach Mike Brill.
The Crusaders’ final record was 5-7 overall.
