The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) released their 2016 pairings on Sunday and Sampson County had four teams make the playoffs: Clinton, Union, Lakewood and Midway. They will all be in action this Friday, Nov. 18.
In 1AA, Lakewood and Union will continue play, both in the East bracket. Lakewood (8-3) will host Spring Creek. The Leopards finished as tri-champions of the Carolina Conference and ranked one in their bracket. They were tied with North Duplin and Princeton, all having a 5-1 Carolina Conference record. They are currently riding a five-game win streak going into the playoffs.
Also in 1AA, the Union Spartans finished their regular season with a 7-4 overall record. They finished in a tie for fourth place in the Four County Conference with Trask. They got off to a five-game winning streak and lost to Trask in a game they likely should have won. This will be the rubber game as these two face off with identical records. Union is the number three seed and Trask will enter as the sixth seed.
In the 2A, Midway will play at Northeastern. The Raiders will be ranked eighth in their bracket are 5-6 overall and they will face Northeastern, the number one seed with a 9-2 overall record. Northeastern is located in Elizabeth City and they finished in a three-way tie with Hertford and John A. Holmes with a 5-1 record in the Northeastern Coastal Conference. The Raiders are 2-5 in the Four County Conference, tied for fifth with the Pender Patriots.
The Horses, the number one seed in the 2AA, will entertain North Lenoir in Dark Horse Stadium. North Lenoir is seeded eighth and has a 6-5 overall record. North Lenoir finished in second place behind Ayden-Grifton with a 4-1 record in the Eastern Carolina Conference. The Horses are 11-0 overall and finished in first place in the Four County Conference. They are the number one seed in the state.
All games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
