The Midway Raiders golf team is headed to the State 2A Championship match next week, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in Pinehurst.
The Raiders finished in first place in Monday’s Regional Round at the Vineyards at White Lake behind freshman Logan Patrick scoring the lowest score of the match with a 76, earning him medalist honors.
Also contributing to Midway’s winning score was Blake Norris with an 81, Trey Pope with an 84, Andrew Eldridge with an 86 and Jordan Sullivan with a 92.
The players combined for a first place total of 327, which was 13 strokes better than second place Reidsville who scored a 340 to also qualify for the State Championship. Roanoke Rapids rounded out the teams qualifying for the State Match in third place with a score of 342.
South Columbus finished in fourth place with a 353; Carrboro placed fifth with a 364; North Carolina School of Math and Science finished sixth with a 395; and Franklinton placed seventh with a 418.
“We didn’t play the best but it all goes back to hard work. These boys have worked hard in practice and they scrambled well and brought home the win,” said Midway head coach Glenn Patrick.
“They’ve really bought into the system and at this point we just have to keep pushing and keep it rolling and see how everything falls.”
Patrick also spoke highly of Blake Norris, who didn’t let a bad hole throw off his otherwise solid day.
“Blake started on the back nine and shot a 34. Unfortunately, he took a 12 on one hole but it didn’t get him down. He still shot an 81 on the day and I can easily say he’s one of my most improved players this season,” Patrick continued.
The West Regionals have not been finalized at this time so west-represented participants are to be determined.
Clinton’s Chandler Perry, who was participating in singles, finished in second place behind Midway’s Patrick with a score of 79.
