Clinton High School celebrated four graduating members of the Dark Horses football team this past Wednesday as they signed letters of intent for their respective future universities in a group ceremony.

The ceremony, held inside the school’s auditorium, was made all the more special when former Shaw University football player, and a member of the school’s Hall of Fame, Lenzie Grice made an appearance. Grice gave a succinct speech to the players, offering guidance and support on their next steps into the collegiate level.

In front of an auditorium full of family, friends, teammates, and coaches, the four athletes put their collegiate futures in writing. Aaron Highsmith inked with Greensboro College, Prentice Murphy signed to Louisburg College, Isaiah Page committed to St. Andrew’s University, and Ryheem Skinner gave Allan Hancock College his signature.

Grice congratulated the group of young men after as he proceeded down to the front of the auditorium to share wisdom and advice from his time in collegiate football.

“Just be ready, especially mentally ready. You just have to take that next step,” he started, imparting the importance of a stable motivation and drive during the transition to college sports as a young athlete.

He also extolled the importance of maintaining their education following graduation at Clinton. “Concentrate on what you’re there for, don’t get side-tracked. You’ve got to study that book and you gotta stick with school.”

As for the support of the rising college freshmen, Clinton’s faculty is excited and pleased.

“They’re four great young men and good football players,” said Clinton High’s head football coach Bob Lewis. “I’m glad they get the chance to play further and they have the opportunity to do that, and I’m happy for them.”
