The Clinton Dark Horses and Lakewood Leopards volleyball teams faced off against one another Wednesday in a five-set battle in which the Horses came out on top.

Though the Leopards had been on fire this season, coming into their first conference match of the year 5-1, they weren’t able to keep that spark going against Clinton, losing by a slim 3-2 margin. The Horses, on the other hand, garner a huge victory. They came in 3-4 and not only even up their record at 4-4 with the victory, but remain undefeated through three conference matches.

The sets went back and forth.

Clinton would win the first set, 25-19, before the Leopards quickly bounced back, taking the second set, 25-15. The Horses were able to rebound with a 25-18 third-set victory, but Lakewood was again able to answer, eking out a 26-24 win in set four.

The fifth set was another close one, as the Lady Dark Horses were able to squeeze out the win 15-11, giving them the match.

Though Lakewood lost, Anna Beth Averette and Ally Royal had huge games. Averette would end the night with an impressive 24 kills and Royal finished with 14. Brianna Wheeler also played really well, leading the team with 18 digs for the Leopards. Stats for the Dark Horses were not immediately available.

With the hard-fought rivalry match in the books, the victorious Horses go up to 4-4 on the season and are 3-0 in conference play. Lakewood falls to 5-2, but start conference play off 0-1.

Clinton will play another rival team as they continue conference play next Tuesday, hosting the Midway Raiders. As for Lakewood, they were in search of their first conference win Thursday as the Leopards were set to host North Duplin.
