Hobbton Middle School’s sports seasons are finally underway as the Wildcats went head to head with their oppenents in volleyball and soccer, getting a win and draw, respectively.

Volleyball

The Hobbton Middle School Lady Wildcats volleyball team won a tough fought match over the Union Spartans on Monday. After, taking the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-6, the Wildcats surrendered the third set 25-20 before closing out the match 25-15.

“We are both young and inexperienced teams,” remarked Hobbton coach Chip Pollock. “The girls on both sides played really hard and gave their all. I’m just glad we were able to come out with the win.”

Leading the way for the Wildcats were Abby Driver (26 service points), Alyssa Maragelis (nine service points, five kills) and Gracie Jones (14 service points).

“I’m very proud of all of the girls,” stated Pollock. “Abby Driver was a manager last year and worked really hard to get some playing time this year. Not only did she earn playing time, she scored 26 for us on her serves.”

Hobbton returns to action on Thursday at Roseboro-Salemburg and Union hosts Midway.

Soccer

Hobbton Middle kicked off a new soccer season hosting the Spartans of Union Middle School. The teams would battle it out in the first half, with neither team scoring. Both team’s goalkeepers would make outstanding saves to keep it scoreless.

Union’s Fabian Romero would eventually score off of a corner kick 10 minutes into the second half to put the Spartans in the lead. With a minute left in the game, Hobbton’s Oscar Acevedo scored on a penalty kick to tie the game.

The game went into overtime, with neither team scoring and the match being declared a draw. Hobbton goes to Roseboro-Salemburg on Thursday to play the Leopards, game time is 4 p.m.
