The Lady Lions of MCA kept their winning streak alive by defeating the Gators in straight sets last week.

The first set was a back-and-forth battle, with the Gators taking an early lead and expanding it to 7-4. The Lions clawed back, taking the lead at 9-8. From there, both teams exchanged leads but never by more than two points. With the score tied at 22, the Lions sided out to get 23, but lost the serve. However, Katelyn Fann’s kill moved MCA ahead and an ace by Courtney Fann sealed the deal.

The second set had the scored tied at 3 before Ashley Hayes went on a six-point run serving four aces. Caroline Matthews added a six-point run with four aces as well. The Lions cruised to a 25-14 win in that set.

The third set was dominated again by the Lions serving, with Erynn Sessoms adding eight straight, and Emma White adding five, leading the Lions to win 25-15 for the three-set sweep.

“I was pleased with our play tonight,” said coach Dan Heinz. “We were doing lots of good things, but Antioch was really scrappy. They dug a lot of hard shots time and time again, but our girls were consistent. I was very happy to see Ashley Hayes have a breakout game.”

With this win, the Lions improve to 5-1. They prepare to take on Liberty Christian Academy on Tuesday in a home conference match.
