The Lions of Mintz Christian traveled to take on the Gators of Antioch Christian Academy in volleyball and soccer action.

The lady Lions swept the Gators in straight sets. The Lions easily handled the first set 25-13 behind the strong serving of Erynn Sessoms with five aces and Caroline Mathews with three aces.

The Gators came back strong in the second set jumping out to an 11-2 lead. The Lions battled back to within three points at 18-15, but the gators ran five points to lead 22-18. The Lions fought back to 24-22 and then went on to clean up the set winning 26-24. The third set was all Mintz, winning 25-13 with Hailey Davis capping the win with three aces.

“I was pleased with our play today overall,” said coach Dan Heinz. We were missing two starters and Britney Christianson did a good job stepping in to play the middle and Ashley Hayes on the right side. Emma White had seven blocks and three of those were at key points in the second match. Our setter Courtney Barber dished out 21 assists while our Libero Caroline Matthews added 19 digs.”

In soccer action, the Gators and Lions ended in a 3-3 tie after two 10-minute overtime periods.

The gators scored early at the 23-minute mark, but Daniel Matthews evened it out at the 38-minute mark of the first have. Goalkeeper Evan Plant held off the Gator attack until the 67-minute mark when they netted the go ahead goal. With four minutes left in regulation Lane Thornton tied the match of an assist from Kevin Smith.

The Gators struck first in the overtime period but a game saver by Josh Davis in the closing minutes keep the Lions hope alive. Neither team scored in the second overtime. Plant recorded 23 saves and the Lions had 19 shots on goal.
