The Midway Middle Raiders defeated the Wildcats of Hobbton Middle 26-8 Wednesday afternoon in middle school football action.
The Wildcats had first chance but wound up turning the ball over on downs. Midway turned the ball around moving 60 yards and scoring with 1:01 left in the first quarter.
Casey Culbreth connected with Allen Lazcano Varravet on a short pass for the score. The Wildcats stopped the PAT attempt short of the goal line.
On the ensuing possession, Hobbton’s ball carrier had the ball knocked out of his hands by Midway’s defense with the Raiders recovering on the Wildcat 25-yard line. Culbreth connected on a 25-yard pass play for a score. The PAT attempt was short again. The score was 12-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, the Wildcats were getting close but gave up the ball on downs with an incomplete pass in the end zone.
Midway took over on their 13-yard line.The moved the ball 87 yards for a score with 1:47 left in the second quarter. Trey Gregory scored on an 8-yard run. With the PAT good on a pass play, the score was 20-0 with 1:47 left in the half.
Midway had first possession after the half. They took the ball 60 yards for a score with 2:12 left in the third quarter. The PAT failed.
The Midway coaching staff began putting the younger players in after that score. The Wildcats were able to put together 63-yard drive for a score early in the final period.
Chase Bland scampered in from 13 yards out for the score. Loden Bradshaw hit Nathan McLamb on a pass for the PAT.
The two teams jockeyed for position for the rest of the game.
Next week, Union Middle will be at Hobbton Middle and Sampson Middle will be at Roseboro-Salemburg Middle. Midway Middle will be off.
