The Union Spartans traveled to Rosewood Friday night to take on the Eagles, but the home team came away with a 26-14 victory.
The Spartans were off to a great start. They received the opening kickoff and drove right down the field with one running play right after another. The Spartan offensive line dominated the opening drive. Vance King scored from five yards out to make the score 6-0 early in the first quarter.
Rosewood received the ball on the kickoff from the Spartans and proceeded to drive down the field and scored on their first drive as well to tie up the score at 6-6. Union turned the ball over on downs on their second possession and Rosewood took the ball and steadily moved down the field to inside the Spartan 10-yard line.
Paris Baker came up with a big play and intercepted the ball to put the Union offense back on the field. Rosewood held the Spartans and received the ball back on the punt. Once again, the Eagles drove down the field as time ran out in the first quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, Rosewood scored a touchdown and kicked the extra point to make the score 13-6. Union got the ball back on the kickoff but went nowhere this time as the Rosewood defense held them and forced a Spartans punt. Rosewood took advantage and scored a touchdown on a long pass play to make the score 20-6.
The teams traded possessions several times before halftime but neither team could sustain a long drive.
The Union defense came out of halftime fired up, it showed on the field as the Rosewood offense lost yardage and punted the ball to the Spartans after being held on downs. The Spartan offense takes the field but fumbles the ball back to the Eagles. On the second play after getting the ball back, Rosewood scores a touchdown to make the score 26-6.
Neither team would score again in the third quarter.
The Spartans were driving down the field as the fourth quarter began but ended up punting the ball back to the Eagles. Rosewood goes nowhere on offense this time and after a bad punt Union takes over on the Rosewood side of the field.
Union drives down the field with the strong running game that got the first touchdown. Once inside the 10 yard line, Tyler Murphy runs the ball in for a touchdown from five yards out. Murphy also ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 26-14. Union got the ball back after a defensive stand but couldn’t put any more points on the board and the game ended.
“We have to put this game behind us and get ready for next week,”said Union coach Doug Burley.
The 2-7 Spartans play on their home field next Friday night against Hobbton.
