The Hobbton Wildcats men’s basketball team made it to the champion game in the Kenny Bass Hobbton Holiday Classic for the second year in row on Friday afternoon, but weren’t able to claim the title as their dreams were quickly dashed by C.B. Aycock in a 72-28 rout.

The result of the first quarter tells the story of this game with Hobbton going down 18 to start the game, allowing the Golden Falcons to score 27 in the first period while only scoring nine themselves, putting them in a deep hole.

The second quarter was more of the same, with the Wildcats only managing another nine points on offense while C.B. Aycock rolled out another 18 before halftime. With the lead increased to 27 the Golden Falcons continued to soar over Hobbton, the score at the break 45-18.

The pattern continued out of halftime with Aycock using a 20-8 advantage to extend the lead to 65-26 at the end of three quarters. The mercy rule was put into effect in the fourth as the clock ran without stopping to end the game.

“I think our kids got too happy with just making it to the championship for the second year in a row,” said head coach Alfonza Hooper. “We had no drive or intensity tonight and I know we’re a better ball club than this. We’ll have to move on because it’s time to go to work and get ready for conference.”

Omar Farrior was the leading scorer he ended the game with 13 of the Wildcats’ 28 points.

Hobbton is now 1-7 overall and 1-1 in the conference. They next face Wilmington Christian Academy on Friday in their holiday tournament.
