In their first win of the season, Union hosted James Kenan in an intense match on Thursday. The game was taken into an extra set, but the Spartans came out on top.
The first set was an incredibly close match. For most of the game the teams were only one or two points apart. Union barely took the win with a score of 25-22.
The Spartans took an early lead going into the second set with a score of 10-2. They were able to hold on to that lead and the Tigers were unable to catch up. Union won 25-15.
When the third set began the Spartans took the lead but the Tigers rallied past them. By the first time out the Spartans were losing 4-9. The Tigers held on to their lead into the second time out with a score of 16-23. The Lady Spartans were unable to recover and lost the third set 19-25.
The fourth set showed extreme intensity from both teams. Neither team could take the clear lead which ended with a Spartan win of 31-29, but that wasn’t enough and the game went into overtime. Union dominated overtime with many aces and kills. They won their fifth and final set, 15-7 giving the Lady Spartans their first win.
Leading the Lady Spartans were Skye Page, with five aces; Destiny Robinson with seven kills and two blocks, and Lindsey Ammons with three kills and four blocks.
Union’s Head coach, Krystin Moore, commented on the team’s improvement, saying, “We started off the season scrappy. We had to fight and scrap in every game. This is by far the best ball game they’ve played yet.
“James Kenan put up a fight. We lost the first time we played them but we took the second game. Each and every girl contributed with significant force. I couldn’t be more proud to go to a fight with any other team.”
The junior varsity lost two straight sets, the first by a score of 15-25, and the second 20-25.
The Lady Spartans will host West Bladen next Thursday, Sept. 9.
