The Clinton Dark Horses’ soccer team is the number one soccer team in all classifications in the state of North Carolina according to this past week’s MaxPreps.com’s poll.
They surely played like it on Thursday with a 5-0 route of Triton, in Erwin.
Clinton began the game sluggish, but then quickly turned things on to grab a 2-0 halftime lead, before eventually shutting the door on any hopes Triton had in the second half.
Scoring for Clinton were Donald Blue, Spell Carr, Peter Darden, Ivan Palencia, and Jose Vasquez.
Scores were assisted by Ivan Ponce, Zach Darden, and Corey Smith.
Clinton’s assistant coach Jamie Williams was pleased with the team’s performance, once they got going.
“I thought we started slow. We have had early success in a lot of games this year, and when we didn’t today, I think that kind of got us to pressing,” he said. “Once we settled down, we really played some good soccer. We were able to play everyone, which is something us as a coaching staff always likes, and we had 23 shots on goal tonight, which we really like too. Their (Triton’s) goalie was very good to only allow five scores in the 23 shots on goal we had. We had 10 corner kicks too. As for being number one, it’s the first time that has happened since Coach (Brad) Spell and myself have been here, so it is a great accomplishment. We won’t get content though, we are going to let it be motivation to continue to work hard.”
Clinton, now 5-0, is back in action on Tuesday, when they are set to have a rematch with the Hawks, but this time it will be played at the Darkness Soccer Complex at Clinton High School.
