Clinton’s Lady Dark Horses volleyball team continued its winning ways Thursday with a 4 set win at Midway. It was the 3rd conference match for each team.
The Lady Raiders trailed 15-10 in game 1 before catching fire. They outscored Clinton 14-2 to post a 24-17 lead. The Lady Horses, however, were not finished. They reeled off 9 straight points to take the first set 26-24.
In the 2nd set, the visitors led all the way. Midway coach Jennifer Naylor took a timeout trailing 13-8. Her Lady Raiders responded with a run to cut it to 19-17. Following a Clinton timeout, the Lady Horses reclaimed momentum and finished with a score of 25-19.
Game 3 went to Midway. The Lady Raiders led by scores of 10-1 and 19-4, before hanging on for a 25-15 final.
The 4th set may have been the best of the day. Clinton jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but Midway came back to go up 12-11 and later 18-13. Trailing 20-17, the Lady Dark Horses, with the strong serve of Francesca Jauregui, came roaring back to win 25-21.
“It was hard,” declared Clinton coach Jennifer Edgerton. “We fought back a lot. It seems like we play the best when we’re down. They had to pull it out and they showed who wanted it more. Midway has improved a lot since I saw them early in the season and they made us fight.”
“They came back twice,” attested coach Naylor. “We knew they were going to be good competition and we want competition. We made several errors and ended up giving them 32 points, and against a good team that’s a lot. We’re going to work to clean up those things. We’ve had 3 tough games in a row and we’re going to continue to grow and we’ll be ready to go to Clinton.”
The Lady Raiders fall to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the Four County Conference. They will host non-conference Princeton on Monday, before traveling to Wallace-Rose Hill on Tuesday to resume Four County play.
The Lady Dark Horses, 7-1 and 3-0, will try to avenge their only loss as they host Harrells Academy on Monday.
