The Hobbton Wildcat volleyball team hosted the Rebels of North Duplin Thursday. The decision was split. The Wildcat JV won 2-1; but the varsity lost 3-1.

Hobbton coach Russell Jones said, “We looked bad the first game losing 25-23. In the second game, we had a good run. Sarah Suggs served 14 straight points. We won 25-6. The third game was a lot closer and we won that one 25-21. Our serves helped in this one. Ariana Corbett got us 9 straight points on her serve rotation to put us 19-7. We eventually won that on 25-21.”

The JV is 2-2 in the conference and 6-4 overall.

The varsity had consistency problems. Jones said, “We were extremely streaky; we would play good a while and then play badly. In the first game we missed 4 serves. We only rotated 8 times and missed 4 of those so we only batted 4 times. We got beat 25-12.

“In the second game, we played a lot better. We were close at the end losing 25-23. We did win the 3rd game. That was our most consistent game. In the 4th game we were ahead 19-16, and lost the serve and never got it back. We got beat 25-19.”

The varsity Wildcats are 1 -3 in the conference and 5-5 overall.

Jones praised Nina Devone saying, “Nina play great. She did a great job at the net getting a lot of blocks and kills. Some others had an occasional good day. However consistency was a problem. MacKenzie Williams served well in the one we let slip away.

The Wildcats play again Tuesday at Lakewood.
