Lakewood High School’s volleyball team was back in action on Tuesday when they took on North Duplin in a conference match. The Lady Leopards were able to get out early with a win, as they swept the Rebels, 3-0.

Lakewood won the first set by a score of 25-20 in the closest played set of the day. They then cruised in the next two sets, winning the second, 25-15, and the third, 25-12.

Many players had strong outings for Lakewood in what really was a team performance. They were led by Morgan Bonner, who had 9 kills, 2 aces, and 2 digs; Courtney Mixon with 8 kills and 2 aces; Alana Jackson with 17 assists, and Anna Heinz, who had 18 digs, 2 aces, and 3 assists

Lakewood’s head coach Sheila Davidson liked the way her team played on Tuesday. “I was very pleased with the connection that we are getting on the middle and outsides,” she said. “Morgan Bonner had a great game with 9 kills and Courtney Mixon had 8 kills in the middle, and that is a big step forward for us. North Duplin continues to improve and they play with a lot of heart. This is a good win and we’ll try to keep it going Thursday.”

Lakewood will try to keep it going when they play at Neuse Charter on Thursday. They are now 9-7 overall on the year, and 5-2 in conference play. They are currently in second place in the Carolina 1-A Conference, trailing only defending state champion, Princeton.
