The Rosewood Eagles traveled to Lakewood Friday for a game that would put the winner in sole possession of first place in the Carolina 1A Conference. The Eagles, fresh from knocking off the top team in state (James Kenan), hoped to avoid the hangover. They didn’t. Lakewood took an early lead and coasted to a 47-17 victory.
The defenses held on the opening possessions for each team, but not so much after that. On the Leopards 2nd time on offense, D. J. Eason ran 40 yards for a first down and set up Carsell Bennet who then scampered 2 yards for the first score of the night. Alex Campos delivered the PAT and it was 7-0 with 6:47 left in the 1st period.
After holding the Eagles on a 4th down play, the Leopards were back in business. Following a Zack Tanner first down run, Quamaine Williams found pay dirt from 11 yards out. At the 2:38 point of the opening frame, it was 14-0.
The Eagles were not ready to give up. Quarterback Cameron Helt connected with Red Almontaser on a 42 yard touchdown pass and Rosewood was right back in the game, as the quarter expired.
On the Eagles next possession, Almontaser kicked a 25 yard field goal to make it 14-10, with 6:47 to go before intermission.
Lakewood responded with 34 yard scoring run on 4th and 1. Williams carried it in and Campos hit another PAT for a 21-10 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles got pinned on the 1 yard line. Two plays later, Jirah Cooper tackled Alex Godwin in the end zone for a Leopard safety. With 2:42 to go, it was 23-10 Leopards.
Campos nailed a 23 yard field goal as time expired to make it 26-10 at halftime.
At intermission, Rachel Ashford was named Homecoming Queen.
Neither team scored in the 3rd period. However, early in the 4th, quarterback Tanner found Jordan Melvin for a 42 yard pass and a 33-10 lead.
With 7:12 remaining, Williams broke free for a 47 yard run and a 40-10 lead. Five seconds later, following a kickoff recovery, William Moore ran a yard and the score was 47-10. The final PAT was kicked by Lloosman Zabala.
The Eagles got a touchdown on a Helt pass to Bronton Woodard to account for the final score of 47-17.
“Rosewood is a very explosive offensive team,” attested Lakewood
head coach James Lewis. “Our defense is our strength and they played outstanding tonight. I’m proud of them and offensively, we controlled the game. It seemed like we had the ball the whole night. The kids just played hard. It was a big game and we rose to the occasion.”
Offensively for the Leopards, Bennett rushed 13 times for 123 yards. Tanner completed 6 of 7 pass attempts for 77 yards and also ran for 91. Cooper had 2 receptions for 44 yards.
Ethan Blackwell led the Lakewood defense with 10 tackles. Tristan Holmes added 9. Cooper added 6 tackles to go along with a safety and a sack. James Sinclair also provided 6 tackles.
The Leopards improve to 3-0 in conference play and 6-2 overall. They will travel to James Kenan next week. Rosewood is 3-1 and 5-3. They will visit North Duplin next Friday.
