On September 16, Midway traveled to Pender and brought back a 4-0 victory. They were planning on at least that on the Pender visit to Spivey’s Corner Monday. Unfortunately for the Raiders, the Pender Patriots brought their A game and posted a 2-0 victory.

The game’s first goal came just 4 and a half minutes into the match. Pender’s Eduardo Rivera pounced on a kick from Midway goalkeeper Matthew Core and hit pay dirt.

The game remained 1-0 until there was on 5:28 left to play. Osvaldo Rivera scored on a penalty kick and 2-0 would stand as the final score.

“They played hard. They finally marked. They finally took some good shots,” assessed Pender head coach John Greenough. “We hadn’t been shooting at the goal box at all. The guys were stepping up and we had a phenomenal game from our goalie. He saved 4 goals in the first half that should have been in. We had some heart tonight.”

“Pender hit the field and outplayed us,” observed Midway head coach Allen McLamb. “They beat us to spots and they deserved to win. We’ll go back and work hard and get ready to play Clinton.”

The Raiders did get several shots on goal. Juan Medellin and Nestor Antonio had 3 shots each. Jonathan Espino had 2. Montgomery Sprague, Luis Acosta, and Uvaldo Acosta each had a shot.

Midway falls 7-6-2 overall and 4-5 in the Four County Conference. They will visit Clinton tonight. (Wednesday) Pender is 5-10-1 and 2-6. Their next game will be at home versus East Bladen.
