Clinton’s boys basketball team opened their season with an impressive win over 3A West Craven in their Tip-Off Classic, at Clinton on Friday. The Dark Horses, short-staffed with football players still playing football, still were able to pull away and top West Craven by six, 59-53.
Clinton jumped out to a 15-15 lead after a quarter, but West Craven tied things up at 31 heading into halftime.
Clinton built a four point lead entering the fourth, leading 45-41, before ultimately being led by seniors Logan Batchelor, Jaquan McLean, and EJ Howard to the 59-53 victory.
McLean led the Dark Horses in scoring, putting up 20 on the night. JJ Robertson and Dewan Lesane each added 10 to help Clinton out. EJ Howard pulled down 8 rebounds to go with his 6 points, and Logan Batchelor had 6 points and 6 assists.
“This was a good opening win against a 3A team,” said Clinton’s head coach, Randy Jordan. “We had good senior leadership from Logan Batchelor, Jaquan McLean, and EJ Howard. We had an eight point lead in the fourth, and they really helped us stay poised and settled us down. I also thought we had good production from our younger guys as well today. It was a solid win to start out the season with.”
Clinton faces Carolina Forest (SC) in the second day of the Dark Horse Tip Off Classic on Saturday. They are now 1-0 on the season.
