The Hobbton Wildcat boys hosted the Union Spartans Tuesday night and got a good win over the Spartans, 53-41.

The Spartans jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first quarter; however, in the second, the Wildcats jumped on them out scoring them 16-14 for a 22-20 halftime lead. The score was tied twice in the second, once at 14 all and then 18 all. After the break, the Wildcats took over the game going up by 8, 40-32 after 3 quarters. In the final frame, the Wildcats got 13 points to Union’s 9 for the 53-41 final.

Union coach Keagan Warren said, “We came out tonight with a lack of effort. We just couldn’t get anything going. We turned the ball over too many times. When you turn over the ball 11 times in the first half, you aren’t going to win ball games. We have 2 days to practice and bounce back for Lakewood Friday night.”

Coach Alphonzo Hooper of Hobbton said, “It was a good win. In the first half they did some things we couldn’t figure out. We got off to a slow start. We only scored 4 points in the first quarter and was not pleased with that. The last couple of games we lost, we lost on free throws. In the first half we missed a lot of free throws.

“I think we left 1o or 12 on the board. In the second quarter we started playing better defense with some traps and the like. I think that bothered them some. They are so tall and so athletic they are tough. Union is always going to be like that. We’ve been working on running two groups. I have a speed group we put in and I think that bothered them some. We played more man to man and trapping. With that we got a little run and then put the starters back in. It’s really no secret, we are trying to go inside with the basketball to Hunter Britt. We like to play inside out. It was a great win.”

Britt led the scoring with 17 points. Omar Farrior had 10 points and Collin King had 9. For Union, Donta Chavious had 11 and Donovan Hayes had 9.

The Wildcats travel to Midway Friday night while the Spartans travel to Lakewood to take on the Leopards.
