The Midway Raiders used a stingy defense and well balanced scoring to take down North Johnston Tuesday night in Spivey’s Corner. The game was close only in the opening moments. The home team finished with 75 points while holding the Panthers to 42.
The Raiders got 9 points from Shyheim Small in the opening quarter to set the stage for home team. Midway led 22-16 headed to the 2nd period.
Midway’s defense took charge and held the Panthers to just 5 points in the 2nd frame. Austin Raynor was a force on the boards and provided 6 points as the Raiders took a 41-21 lead into intermission.
In the 3rd quarter, it was more of the same, even though the personnel kept changing. The Panthers were again held to 5 points while the Raiders posted 18. It was 59-26 after 3.
In the final frame, Midway got help lots of sources as they finished with the 33 point win.
For the game, Small led in scoring with 11 points. Dariuss Perez had 10, while Marelle Bullock and Michael Kramer connected on 9 each. Raynor and Ayden Canady provided 8 a piece. Jackson Carr scored 4. Adam Butler, Griffin Williams, and Kendall Marley each added 3. Paris Smith, Juane Summers, and Matthew Core contributed 2 a piece. Greg Orr added a free throw.
“14 out of 15 scored tonight,” remarked Midway head coach Matthew Creech. “I think that speaks to the unselfishness of our guys. I think defense set the tone all 4 quarters. In the 2nd and 3rd quarters we held them to 5 points. Some of that you attritube to them not having their best shooting night, but some of that I thought our defense was just stifling. We’re excited to get this win.”
The Raiders improve to 4-0. After a Wednesday home date with Lakewood, Midway will host Hobbton on Friday. North Johnston falls to 4-3. They will travel to Princeton on Friday.
