MOUNT OLIVE- The University of Mount Olive men’s and women’s track and field teams are spreading a little Christmas cheer this season as they post cards and personal notes to terminally ill children from around the world.

Track and Field Associate Coach Jackie Kirby organized the community service project after hearing about the amazing opportunity through Send Kids the World organization.

Send Kids the World is an initiative that features children with life threatening illnesses and injuries and enables participants to reach out to the children and send them encouraging postcards from all around the world.

“It is sometimes challenging to find service projects for our entire team to participate in due to size and transportation,” explained Kirby. “This project allowed each individual on the team to reach out to a child with a hand written note, along with a picture of the team to attempt to bring joy and support through the child’s difficult struggle during the holiday season.”

The University, sponsored by the Convention of Original Free Will Baptists, has locations in Mount Olive, New Bern, Wilmington, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Research Triangle Park, Washington, Jacksonville, and in Smithfield at Johnston Community College.
