Rosewood and Lakewood battled it out at Lakewood on Tuesday evening in a tough conference battle. In the end, it was the Leopards holding off a late Eagle spurt, to win the game, 73-70.
Lakewood led early in the first quarter 8-0, but Rosewood answered with an 11-4 run to end the quarter. The Leopards held a 12-11 lead after the opening frame.
In the second, the Leopards caught fire. Johnnie Owens knocked down five consecutive shots at one point for the Leopards, and they went on to take a 38-29 lead into the halftime locker room.
Lakewood extended that lead to 12 in the third quarter, and led by 12 early in the final frame. Rosewood then went on a run to cut into the lead, and make things very interesting. A Rosewood 3-ball with two minutes to play erased a big portion of the Eagles’ deficit, making the score 69-67, in favor of Lakewood.
After a pair of makes at the line, then another Rosewood triple, the lead was back down to 1, at 71-70. Lakewood was able to get a stop on the last Rosewood possession after knocking down another pair of free throws on their end. Lakewood edged the Eagles 73-70, to improve to 3-0 in the Carolina 1A Conference.
They are currently atop the standings in conference play, and will have a tough test on Friday when they travel to James Kenan.
“James Kenan and Neuse Charter, they are our next two games,” said Lakewood’s head coach Sylvester Pittman. “They are two of the best teams in the conference, so we will really know where we stand after the next two games. I think that if we play the way we know how, and are patient on the offensive end, we can really compete at the top of the conference. Tonight was a good win, and I’m proud of the way we did things down the stretch tonight too. We are hoping to build on tonight and be ready to play come Friday.”
Lakewood is now 3-0 in conference play and 5-5 overall. Their game at James Kenan is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.
