The Lady Dark Horses traveled to take on the Union Lady Spartans in some mid-week basketball action. Clinton owned the court on Wednesday night, defeating the Lady Spartans, 74-16.
The first quarter started out slowly with the few first minutes seeing little to no baskets. The Lady Dark Horses picked up their momentum halfway through the first quarter and the Lady Spartans were just unable to catch up. Clinton played strong and put 26 points on the scoreboard at the end of the first while allowing the Lady Spartans only 6.
The Lady Dark Horses did not slow up any in the second quarter either and continued to make basket after basket. The Clinton defense worked hard against the Lady Spartans and it worked because Union remained at 6 point at the end of the second while Clinton had 47.
After the half the Lady Dark Horses found a steady pace that allowed the Lady Spartans to find the net a few time but also to maintain a big lead. At the end of the third quarter the score was 62-13. The fourth quarter saw little change as the Lady Dark Horses continued to find the net. They took the win by a huge 58 point, 74-16.
Clinton’s head coach, Chris Owens was very pleased with the win. “I thought our girls came out pretty good. Which our offensive usually sets the tone and we shot the ball really good tonight.” Owens also liked the teamwork he saw tonight. “I was pleased with the way they shared the ball and how they helped each other out and that’s why we got the victory,” he concluded.
Even though the Lady Spartans took a big loss head coach, Bryant Register was still pleased with his team. “We were undermanned tonight so overall I’m very proud of the effort that these ladies put forth. The scoreboard might not indicate it but I’m really proud of their effort. They competed and battled hard but they just couldn’t put the ball in the basket tonight. We will just come back and practice and get ready for the next game.”
Alex Canady led the Lady Dark Horses with 23 points and Brielle Mitchell had 20. Other leading scorers were Alaina Capps with 7, Kiera Mabry with 6, and Ashlyn Williams with 5.
The Lady Spartans were led by Alison Alphin with 4 points and Mia Bronson with 3.
The Lady Dark Horses will take the basketball action back home Friday as they welcome the Lady Knights from West Bladen and the Lady Spartans also on Friday will travel to Pender.
