Sampson Middle School is advancing to the conference championship on Thursday in their gym. They dropped Union on Monday by a score of 46-27, to move on to the championship game.
After a sluggish start from Sampson, Union led 12-11 after a quarter. When the Dark Horses’ intensity picked up, the scoreboard showed it. They built a 26-17 lead entering halftime, and extended that to 35-21 in the third, before the final 46-27 win.
“We are not a good shooting team,” said Sampson Middle School head coach, Ron Davis. “When we don’t rebound and play defense it puts us in a bind. About halfway through the second quarter, we started doing that, and it really helped us out. That is going to be the key for us against Midway on Thursday, defense and rebounding.”
Union was led in the scoring column by Milcolm Pigford and Hezekiah Pigan, who each scored 9 points to lead the Spartans, who had a solid year under head coach Byron Bass.
Sampson was led by Dion Venable’s 8 points and Jamelle Williams’ 12.
The Raiders come to town to take on the Dark Horses for a third time on the year when they play for the conference title on Thursday. The teams have split the first two match-ups, meaning this one is set to be a great one. Tip time for this game is set for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
