The Midway Middle girls took the Sampson County Middle School basketball championship in a tight game with Sampson Middle. The final was 34-28. Midway also won the regular season championship.
Sampson jumped out to a small lead in the first quarter. However; Midway closed that down to a 7-6 Sampson lead at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, both teams traded the lead. Midway went up 8-7, Sampson came back up 9-8, Midway went up 10-9 before pulling away for good as the half neared. The halftime score was 21-11, Midway.
Midway continued to build a lead in the third quarter holding a 21-11 margin at the end of 3. Sampson got a run late in the game but could never get closer than a 6-point margin.
Midway’s Jenna Pope led the scoring with 16 points. She also had a double-double picking up 10 rebounds and 2 assists. Teammate Caitlyn Holland had 6 points, 7 steals and 2 assists.
For the Sampson Dark Horses, Jaida Faison had 12 points and Shanyia Nurse had 10.
Winning coach Selena Joseph said, “In the second quarter, I though we got our passing going really good. That’s what really got us going and set up for the rest of the ball game. We got pumped up in the locker room and got going in the second half.”
“The girls played a great game tonight,” said Sampson coach Jamie Harper. “They left it all out there on the court and played with their hearts. I was extremely proud of the way they played”
