Clinton girls advance to conference championship

By Adam Capps -

The Lady Dark Horses of Clinton dropped Wallace on Thursday night for a trip to the conference championship game. The Lady Horses won the game 66-54, after playing a strong second half.

Clinton trailed at halftime, as the Lady ‘Dogs led 31-29. In the second half, the CHS defense forced many turnovers, and led to them gaining a comfortable lead, and eventually the win.

“I thought we played well after starting out flat,” said Clinton’s head coach, Chris Owens. “Our defense caused them some trouble in the second half, and we have a big challenge ahead in playing the East Bladen Lady Eagles. They are undefeated, but we played them close last time and are looking forward to playing for a conference championship.”

Brielle Mitchell played a big game for Clinton, slashing through the lane getting hoop after hoop. She scored a game-high 24. Zoey Harris scored 7, Keirra Mabry scored 4, Charica Joyner scored 3, Alex Canady had 12, Ashlyn Williams had 12, and Edye Carr and Tanesia Chestnut scored 2 apiece.

Clinton is set to take on the number one team in the state in the 2A ranks, East Bladen, for the conference title on Friday night. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Union High School.
