The Lakewood Lady Leopards won their second round playoff game over East Columbus Thursday night. The Lady Leopards were forced to travel to East Columbus, and spoiled the higher seed’s chances at moving on to the third round. Instead, it is the Lakewood girls that are moving on to round 3, following a 50-41 win.
Lakewood was paced by Chanel McClellan’s 19 points. Briana Evans chipped in 13 points and Justina Henry scored 8 to help the Lady Leopards pull off the upset.
Lakewood head coach Vonnie McNeil was pleased with how relentless her team was after falling down early, then how proud she was of them for their toughness on Thursday night.
“It was definitely a hard-fought game, it was really intense,” said the first year head coach of the Lady Leopards. “They jumped out on us early scoring easy baskets, and their pressure caused us to have way too many turnovers. We fought hard after being behind by about 10 points for the first 3 quarters,” she continued. “We finally got it together in the fourth and played some team ball. I’m super proud of how my girls didn’t give up and kept fighting. It is another stepping stone for us, and another round. The third round is the third step.”
Lakewood’s round 3 game was played Saturday when they traveled north to take on Plymouth. Information was not available at press time, but for up-to-date scores and sports stories, check out www.clintonnc.com, and follow Adam Capps on Twitter @ac4birdie.
