Clinton kicked off the 2016 women’s soccer season with a dominating performance against non-conference foe Triton. The Lady Horses could have nearly played without a goal keeper as the Lady Hawks were rarely able to get the ball across the midfield stripe. Clinton meanwhile kept constant pressure on the Triton keeper finding the goal six times on 14 shots on goal in the 6-0 shutout of the visiting Lady Hawks.
After banging a couple of shots off the cross bar and posts Clinton found paydirt at 21:39 when Katey Yang took a pass from Alaina Capps and fired it into the Triton goal to give the Lady Horses all they would need for the win. Clinton added to their lead at the 27:05 when Reagan Barefoot hammered in a goal off Alaina Capps’ second assist of the game. Ashlyn Williams capped off the first half scoring when she took a Katey Yang pass and ripped a shot into the back of the nets giving Clinton a 3-0 lead going into the half.
The Lady Horses kept the scoreboard operator busy in the second half when Alaina Capps zipped in a goal assisted by Reagan Barefoot at the 46:25 mark. Freshman Elizabeth Coleman added a goal in the 56th minute when Katy Yang found her wide open about ten yards from the goal. Coleman and Yang combined for the final goal of the game at the 58:30 mark as Coleman flipped a pass to Yang in front of the goal for an easy tip in to run the score to 6-0.
After the game Clinton head coach Jeff Smith was pleased with the season opening win saying, “for the first game I thought we were adequate, not great. We have a lot of things to work on, but I am happy to get the win and have the season off on the right foot. We have a quality team, we just have to get fit and continue to improve.”
The Lady Horses will take to the road for the Battle at the Beach tournament this coming weekend. Clinton will face Dixon on Friday and them square off against traditional powerhouse Swansboro on Saturday morning.
