The Union Spartans hosted the Lakewood Leopards Tuesday night in some non-conference baseball action. The Leopards got a nice win over the Spartans, 13-3.
The first inning began with Matthew Ballance on the mound for the Spartans. The Leopards were able to score a run, giving them an early 1-0 lead.
Zach Tanner pitched for the Leopards the entire game, striking out 12 Spartans in all, but allowed a run in the bottom of the inning, leaving the game at a tie, 1-1.
The score would remain the same until the top of third inning when the Leopards were able to get 5 players around all the bases, giving them the lead, 6-1. The Leopard defense proved too much for the Spartans who were unable to increase their score. Lakewood added one more run in the fourth, 7-1.
The Leopards were kept from scoring in the fifth inning but the Spartans were able to score another run before going into the sixth, 7-2.
The Lakewood momentum became too much for the Spartans in the sixth inning as the Leopards were able to put 6 more runs on the board widening the gap for the lead, 13-2. The Spartans finished out the sixth inning by adding on one more run before the game ended with a Leopard victory, 13-3.
The Leopards had a 11 hits on the night. Chandler Ray went 3 for 5, followed by Zach Tanner and Tristan Holmes who both had 3 for 4. Chandler Honeycutt and Devin Rosenburger both had 2 for 4.
Head coach, Jay Faircloth was happy with the win. “I’m so proud of the boys. Also, Zach Tanner did great tonight, he wasn’t even supposed to pitch and ended up pitching the entire game, and was still able to strike out 12. This is great as my first win as varsity coach.”
The Spartans were both led by Jordan Blackburn and Dawson Thornton who both contributed hits. Blackburn went 2 for 3 and Thornton was 1 for 3.
Spartan head coach, Josh Rackley, was still pleased with his team. “Pitching performed well tonight, we just have got to play a little better defensively behind them. Our bats started to hit the ball better at the end of the game.”
The Spartans will travel on Wednesday to take on the Hobbton Wildcats. The Lakewood Leopards will take the field again back at home when they host the Midway Raiders on Friday.
