Clinton’s Lady Dark Horse soccer team opened Four County Conference play on Tuesday night when they hosted the Pender Lady Patriots. Clinton made short work of the Lady Patriots, netting 7 first half goals and sending the visitors home early with two goals early in the second half, invoking the mercy rule to cap the 9-0 shutout.

Shakira Oseguera scored the first goal of the match at the 3:06 mark off an Alaina Capps assist to give the Lady Horses all the scoring they would need. Ashlyn Williams scored the next two Clinton goals on assists by Katey Yang at the 4:01 mark and Alaina Capps at 8:46 to give Clinton the 3-0 advantage.

Olivia Sessoms was on the receiving end of an Ashlyn Williams corner kick that she sent into the net at the 15:18 mark to push the Clinton lead to 4-0. Elizabeth Coleman accounted for the fifth goal off an Ashlyn Williams assist at 21:47. Senior Zoey Harris got into the books with a goal assisted by Alaina Capps 30:56 into the contest to put Clinton on top 6-0. Alaina Capps tacked on the seventh score of the match late in the first half, punching in an Elizabeth Coleman pass at the 39:11 mark.

The Lady Horses wasted no time lighting the scoreboard in the second half, as Alaina Capps picked up their second goal of the night, assisted by Elizabeth Coleman to run the tab to 8-0 at the 42:04 mark. The Lady Horses finished off the Lady Patriots at the 55:36 mark when Katey Yang took a pass from Ella Faison and fired in the final score to polish off Clinton’s conference opening win.

After the game Clinton Head Coach Jeff Smith was pleased with the 1-0 conference start, saying, “this was a good home win, we played adequately and showed some improvement. We still have a lot of things to work on but we are beginning to get healthy and the younger girls are gaining some confidence.” Smith commented on the Lady Horses upcoming match at East Bladen, adding “we have to continue to improve, we have East Bladen on Friday and they look pretty good. They are 8-0 and we have our work cut out for us. It should be a good match.”

The win over Pender improves Clinton’s record to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in Four County Conference play. Clinton will travel to East Bladen on Friday to face the undefeated Lady Eagles with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
