The Midway Raider baseball team earned their third win of the season on Monday when they traveled to Terry Sanford High School and took on Western Harnett in the Bulldog Easter Invitational.
Chandler Williford was the winning pitcher for the Raiders on a day in which they were finally able to get some things to go their way.
It was an offensive explosion from MHS, as they scored all 8 runs in the fourth inning en route to the 8-1 win. Western Harnett got their lone run in the 5th inning, but could never get any closer.
Offensively, Greg Nobles had a hit and a run scored for Midway. Landon Dorman scored a run; Wesley Johnson had a double and scored a pair of runs; Dustin Holland had a single and a run scored; Chandler Williford had a base-hit and scored once; Austin Peterson and Austin Raynor also scored runs for the Raiders during their barrage in the fourth.
Midway head coach Jason Fussell was pleased with the way his team played, and liked seeing them pile on runs like they did.
“It was a good day for us,” said the Raider coach. “We had a good day at the plate, and played solid defensively too. Chandler Williford threw it well and got the win, and I thought an important thing about today that really helped us was the fact that we played team ball, and had some unselfish at-bats.”
The Raiders lost a tough one to South View in the opening round of this event on Friday, when they came up a run short, in a 4-3 decision to the Tigers.
The win on Monday should give the Raiders some much-needed confidence, as they have struggled to start the season after losing some key pieces from last year’s team.
The win improves their record to 3-7, and they remain 1-3 in the Four County Conference.
Midway played again on Tuesday in the Terry Sanford Easter Tournament, but information was not available at press time. Look for the story on www.clintonnc.com and in Thursday’s paper.
