With the tying run at third base in the bottom of the 7th, Clinton star pitcher Jonathan Wright fanned the last two batters to seal the 4th conference win in as many games for the Dark Horses as they traveled to Trask on Tuesday night.
In cold, windy conditions in Rocky Point, the Horses were led by a strong, 2-hit performance by Bailey Spell on the mound. After his work was done, Wright came in to get the save, and make the long ride back to Clinton a little more enjoyable.
“It was a cold, windy game, but we did what we needed to do to get the job done,” said Clinton’s head coach, Tracy Thornton. “Bailey did a great job on the mound did Jonathan did a nice job of closing it out for us. We are 4-0 in the conference, so we feel good about that. It was a hard-fought game, just like it seems every game is. We are glad to get the win, for sure.”
The Horses led 4-0 before it was cut to 4-2 in the 5th. They added a run in the 6th to extend their lead, before Trask got within one run after plating a couple of runs in the final frame. Clinton closed it out with a 5-4 victory.
Charles Jordan and Bailey Spell each had 2 hits to lead the Dark Horses. Other Clinton batters with hits included Wright, Blake Davis, Jordan Lilliston, Logan Spell, and Trey Warren.
The Horses are now 5-4 overall. They get back into action on Friday night when they are set to host West Bladen High School. The Knights enter the game at 3-8, and have a 2-4 record in the Four County Conference. The Horses are currently alone atop the conference standings.
